August 21, 2022 · Original warrant and search

The Search Warrant, Affidavit and Return

The Adams County warrant authorized the search of Joseph Foreman’s home. A copy of the warrant, Sergeant Brian Newland’s affidavit, and the search returns appear in a later Ohio Supreme Court exhibit. The affidavit records allegations supplied to investigators; those allegations are not established facts. The return lists seized property but is not a judicial finding that a theft occurred.

August 2022 · Cash inventory and contested discrepancy

What the Cash Records Say and What Remains Disputed

The public search return records cash and other seized items. Afroman later alleged approximately $400 was missing. The sheriff’s office has said an outside investigation found a counting mistake, not theft. Both accounts must remain attributed until a signed reconciliation, cash audit and related evidence can settle the details.

The Deputies’ Lawsuit Against Afroman

Seven Adams County deputies sued Foreman over his music, video footage and public commentary after the raid. The filed complaint is reproduced in the Ohio Supreme Court exhibit. It sets out the deputies’ allegations and requests; filing a civil complaint does not prove those claims or create criminal charges against Foreman.

April 19, 2023 · Filed amici brief

The ACLU’s First Amendment Arguments

The ACLU and ACLU of Ohio submitted an amicus brief supporting the defense’s attempt to dismiss the lawsuit. It argued that public criticism of police, including art and commentary about the raid, deserves strong constitutional protection. The brief is legal advocacy, not a judgment made by the court.

October 10, 2023 · Court’s partial dismissal ruling

Which Claims Were Dismissed and Which Continued?

The trial court narrowed the deputies’ case. The ACLU’s case-document collection includes the October 10 decision and explains that some likeness claims were dismissed while other claims, including defamation, continued. A partial dismissal did not end the lawsuit or determine the lawfulness of the original search.

December 29, 2023 · Pleadings decision

Foreman’s Proposed Counterclaim Amendment

The court denied Foreman’s request to amend his answer and counterclaims. This was a procedural ruling in the civil litigation, not a verdict on the deputies’ remaining claims. The ACLU’s litigation chronology identifies the decision.

A Separate Case Over Access to Records

In Ohio Supreme Court case 2023-0707, Adams County officials filed evidence relating to an independent public-records dispute. The filing contains affidavits from Randalyn Worley and Brian Newland, a copy of the 2022 warrant and its returns, the 2023 civil complaint, a docket, and records-request materials. This public-records filing was not a new finding that the warrant was unlawful.

July 1, 2024 · Voluntary dismissal

Three Counterclaims Were Withdrawn

Foreman voluntarily dismissed three of his counterclaims while separate issues remained pending. The action changed the scope of the civil case, not the historical events of the search. The ACLU’s case chronology documents this step.

March 27, 2025 · Counterclaims ruling

The Remaining Counterclaims Survived a Pleadings Motion

A judge denied the deputies’ motion for judgment on the pleadings regarding Foreman’s remaining counterclaims. That allowed those claims to continue at that stage, but was not a final decision that Foreman had proven them.

February 17, 2026 · Summary judgment before trial

Search-Related Counterclaims Dismissed

Before the deputies’ claims went to trial, the court ruled against Foreman’s trespass and property-damage counterclaims. The ACLU reports that the court found the officers’ conduct privileged in executing the warrant. This decision must be distinguished from the later jury verdict favoring Foreman on the claims brought by the deputies.

The Three-Day Trial and the 13-Claim Verdict

After hearing evidence and argument, an Adams County jury returned a verdict for Foreman on all 13 claims submitted by the deputies. This was a civil verdict on those claims; it did not decide whether the August 2022 search was lawful or resolve every later court issue.

After the Verdict: Final Judgment and Notice of Appeal

The court entered judgment after the verdict and addressed an equal division of ordinary court costs. Foreman filed a notice of appeal on April 17. An appeal is not itself a reversal of the jury’s decision or a final appellate disposition.

The trial court explained why it regarded an equal split of ordinary costs as appropriate. Court costs are distinct from damages and attorney fees. The ruling did not undo Foreman’s jury verdict on the deputies’ claims.

Foreman’s New Action Against Brian Newland

Why It Matters

Afroman’s public record involves different legal questions: the August 2022 search, the deputies’ civil claims about his speech, his counterclaims, court costs, an appeal, and a separate 2026 lawsuit. A warrant does not prove the informant’s allegations. A motion is not a ruling. The jury’s 13-claim verdict did not decide every issue in every proceeding.

Source boundary: The Ohio Supreme Court exhibit is court-filed and contains reproduced documents. The ACLU brief is a party-aligned legal argument. Our dated articles and news reports are secondary reporting, not substitutes for certified court records. Missing responses, affidavits, inventories and orders are not represented as available unless independently verified.

Presumed innocent: Disputed allegations remain allegations; claims not tried to the jury must not be treated as resolved by its verdict.
