FACES IN THE FOOTNOTES | ALI ABULABAN CASE
Rights Through the Record
Ana Abulaban and Rayburn Cardenas Barron are at the center of this record. Trial testimony, legal findings, dated reporting and unresolved document questions are kept separate.
Presumption of innocence and trial burden
The prosecution had to prove each charged offense beyond a reasonable doubt. The jury later returned guilty verdicts, which were reviewed in the criminal appeal.
Jury instructions and fair consideration of evidence
The September 2026 appellate judges examined whether a modified CALCRIM 3426 instruction wrongly prevented jurors from weighing intoxication evidence on premeditation. The court concluded the wording was erroneous but harmless on this record.
Witness testimony and child privacy
The appeal also examined the admission of statements attributed to the victims’ young child through a social worker. Those statements are not republished here. They should not be confused with an independent finding about the child’s conduct or experiences.
What Has Not Been Verified
The September 17, 2026 appellate opinion was unpublished and is not generally binding precedent. The sources linked here do not include an independently authenticated complete packet of final trial jury instructions.
