June 5, 2026: Student Witnesses Describe the Tent Confrontation in Austin Metcalf Trial
Several student-athletes testified June 5 about the confrontation between Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony beneath the Memorial High School team tent. Witnesses described requests that Anthony leave, heated words, physical contact and the moments after Austin was stabbed.
Why It Matters
This testimony mattered because the jury had to decide whether Anthony was justified in using deadly force. An eyewitness can describe what they saw or heard, but witnesses can disagree, and their opinions about the law are not a substitute for a verdict.

Students from the track meet told jurors about the crowded stadium bleachers and the tent where the disagreement began. Some described Austin asking Anthony to leave, an exchange of threats or warnings, and Austin pushing Anthony. Those details were important to both sides.
The prosecution argued Anthony provoked the confrontation before taking out a knife. The defense argued that Anthony acted in fear after physical contact. The accounts needed to be compared against surveillance footage and each witness’s perspective.
The video presented to jurors did not clearly show every part of the fatal stabbing. That made the students’ testimony and the ability of defense lawyers to question them especially important. Reporting should not flatten their different descriptions into one uncontested account.
Austin’s twin brother Hunter was present at the event. One witness described Austin’s reaction after being stabbed and said Hunter did not take part in the physical exchange. We are not publishing additional identifying information about other minors who testified.
What Happens Next
The defense continued to challenge witness accounts and evidence before resting June 8. The jury would receive the legal instructions and deliberate June 9.
Historical legal note: The June 9, 2026 murder conviction is described separately from the evidence and defense claims made on this hearing day.
